Suffolk & Cambs Border Junior Table Tennis League

17/03/07

The final league matches for this season were held at King Edward Sports College with a series of closely competed matches.

The Evolution team from Stetchworth started the day in a strong position with the sister and brother team of Kayleigh and Ben Hubbard. They got off to a good start by beating Thurston Arrows by 5 games to 0 though Katie Meadows had a close game against Kayleigh and took a leg.

Evolution then played last years winners Rougham Lions who were also a sister and brother team. Becky Macintyre started well with a win in 4 legs over Ben, but Kayleigh levelled the score with a quite comfortable win over Calum Macintyre. The doubles was another close affair with Evolution just edging it. The next game between Becky and Kayleigh had the potential to be a very close encounter but Kayleigh was in top form not allowing Becky to settle into her game and won comfortably in 3 legs.

Earlier Evolution had played their team-mates Energy and a big surprise was Mike Rowland beating Kayleigh in 5 legs meanwhile brother Tom was beating Paul Nicholson-Lewis. However that was as far as they got because Evolution won the next 3 games and the match 3-2.

Meanwhile the Penns from Gazeley were progressing steadily and started with a 5-0 win over Rougham Lions. This time Becky Macintyre had teamed up with Peter Willcock and though all the games went to 4 legs and one to 5 legs it was the experience of Tom and Dan Penn that saw them home.

Next it was the Penns against Energy and Mike Rowland again won against the odds by beating Dan Penn but the Penns won the rest of the games to win 4-1.

Quietly creeping up the league was the Effort team from Stetchworth and they had a fine 5-0 win over Energy with Chris Kerby and Joe Leeves well on top winning all the games in 3 legs. Another convincing win came over Rougham Lions where they won the 4 singles, just losing the doubles.

At the end of the day Evolution were the Champions with Penns the Runners Up.

In the Second Division, Essence went into the day as leaders and their team of Rhys Davies and Adam Kerby were in no mood to lose the lead. They dominated their matches and won the title in style by beating Rougham Panthers by 4 games to 1. Jonathan Dewar won the sole Panthers game by beating Adam. Rhys Davies went through the whole season without losing a game, whilst Adam Kerby only lost three games out of his 22 played, real championship form.

Another good game in this division saw Bury Bobcats just losing 3-2 to Gazeley Goons. Jamie Barr played well to win both his games for Bobcats against Jordan and Daniel Cousins. Meanwhile his team-mate Tim Warriner was unfortunate to lose both his singles. The deciding tie was in the doubles where the Goons just shaded it in the fifth by 11 points to nine.

Congratulations to Essence on becoming Champions with Expedience as Runners Up.

The Individual Tournament and presentation of prizes will be on April 28th.
